BEN Steer bagged a four-wicket haul to speed Bovey Tracey 2nd XI to a 43-run win over Ipplpen in the B Division derby on the Recreation Ground.
Opener Brad Causey top scored with a patient 42 from 110 balls faced in Bovey Tracey’s rain-affected total of 184 for five in 41 overs. Jamie Bishop had 33 of the first 46 on the board.
Arren de Young made 28 – he and Causey put on 65 for the second wicket – and there was 25 not out down the order from Sam Russell.
Pens’ bowlers Paul Thomas and Harry Lewis made life hard for Bovey’s batters with the ball.
Such are the quirks of the Duckworth-Lewis System used in the DCL when B Division games are rain-affected, Ipplepen found themselves chasing 186 to win.
When Ipplepen were 86 for six in reply – having got bogged down against Braydon Pink and Harry Pitman – the target was largely irrelevant. They were all out with seven overs to go for 142.
Steer steamed in from the Indio End to claim four for 22. Arren de Young wheeled away for a three-wicket haul that included Pens’ top scorer Callum Stanley (41).
Former skipper Ash Harvey was 28 not out at the close.
George Tapley, leading Ipplepen in the absence of Matt Beasant, said: “After restricting Bovey to 184 I thought we were in the game.
“Callum dug in well and, after not batting much for two seasons, Ash Harvey gave us a glimmer of hope.”
Dan Green, the Bovey captain, said the bowling crew were instrumental in gaining a win.
“Brad and Jamie Bishop got us off to a good start, but I felt we didn't get enough runs,” said Green.
“We bowled superbly – a special mention for Braydon Pink and Harry Pitman – and defended a reasonable score.”
South Devon rediscovered their winning touch in the C Division West with a seven-wicket win away to Plymouth 2nd XI.
After back-to-back defeats by Ashburton and Ivybridge, the Newton Abbot side needed a pick-me-up.
Plymouth were skittled out for 128 by Lahiru Samaradivakara (4-28), Toby Goodman (3-30) and Mali Marshall (2-20).
Ed Lockett (19) and Sam Knapman (15) were the only top-order batters to hang around long.
Jack Hughes (20) and James Hulbert (21) rescued Plymouth from 79 for seven with a stand that made the final tally a little more respectable.
Mark Andrews, a 30-year-plus veteran of Tolchards DCL cricket, opened up for South Devon and was still there at the end on 73 not out.
Jonny Martin, another long-serving league player, was at the other end on 29 not out when the winning runs were scored.
No Plymouth bowler took more than one wicket. Anzil Nazmudeen, Ben Stein and James Hulbert all operated below three an over.
