NEWTON Abbot RFC have now gone six games without a win in South West Two – and four games without gaining any points at all – after losing 37-19 at Winscombe, writes Conrad Sutcliffe.
The rock bottom All Whites are not much worse off than they were prior to the latest round of fixtures as three of the four teams above them – Truro, Teignmouth and Wellington – all lost too. North Petherton were the odd ones out.
Teignmouth are the guests at Rackerhayes this Saturday for what has become a must-win game for both of them.
Winscombe made the first impression on the scoreboard with a long-range penalty by winger Joe Burgess.
A break down the left ended in Winscombe’s Lewis Poppadec going clear for the first try of the game. Burgess converted.
Newton Abbot mistakes let Winscombe in for tries by Oscar Browne and Will Pearce.
The All Whites pulled a try back before half time and turned around 22-5 behind.
Burgess took 10 more points off Newton early in the second half by converting his own try then kicking a penalty after the All Whites were pinged for holding on.
Only when the match was as good as won and lost did Newton Abbot put pressure on the Somerset villagers.
Newton Abbot’s scrum was transformed from the bench and became a force Winscombe struggled to contain.
A series of penalties saw the visitors move up field where they were rewarded with a converted try scored off the back of a driving maul.
Winscombe responded with a try from winger Pearce after Newton dropped the ball!
Newton had the final word with a drive-over try in the last minute.
Jed Griffin scored two of Newton Abbot’s tries. Jack Seally had a third. Dan Beer landed two conversions.
Meanwhile, back at Rackerhayes, the NARFC Spartans were beaten by Okehampton II, losing 26-7.
