STOVER Golf Club’s junior duo Braydon Cotton and Cyril Gosling both made an outstanding contribution for Devon Boys U14s recently.

They won the Jack Roberts Southwest League having defeated Cornwall away 6.5/5.5, Dorset at home 8/4, Somerset at home 10.5/1.5 and a 6/6 draw away to Wiltshire.

Braydon won 6.5 points from eight matches and Cyril six points from eight matches so they both made their mark.

Meanwhile, Stover headed to Teignmouth on Sunday, October 20 for the final Junior South Devon League fixture of the season, tied on top of the league with Torquay on 16 points.

Churston were in third on 14, with Dainton and Teignmouth joint 5th on 7 points. Torquay held the upper hand on countback, so to win the league, Stover’s sole task was to ideally finish in first or second place ahead of Torquay.

Due to fog/wind and rain, the start was delayed but play eventually got underway an hour late, albeit with very strong winds with all players finding scoring extremely difficult.

Stover’s combined team score of approx 146 was good for a first-place finish with Churston 2nd, Torquay 3rd and Teignmouth 4th whilst Dainton withdrew due to the delayed start.

This resulted in Stover winning the Junior South Devon league for the 4th year in a row, a remarkable achievement and testament to the hard work put in by all the players, parents and coaching staff.

Having won the JSDL, Stover then travelled to Dawlish on Monday, October 28 to contest Devon Golf’s Henry Truscott Cup against Saunton, Tiverton and Staddon Heights, who had won the other three regional junior leagues.

The competition format was teams of six players with five Stableford scores contributing to each club's overall score- handicap allowances for all players were quite low due to the competition being played off yellow tees, which combined with strong winds, led to scores being generally low.

Tiverton took an early lead with their first two combined scores of 66 with Stover second after 28 from Callum Cogavin and 30 from Brook Tyler Mitchelmore. Next in for Stover was Braydon Cotton, his 38 the equal best score of the day and this swung things very much in Stover’s favour.

Further scores from Calum Cooney 36, Jack Ansley 30 and Freddie Gribble 33 helped maintain Stover’s healthy lead, with the final results announced as Stover winning with 167 points, Saunton 2nd on 153, Tiverton 3rd on 148 and Staddon Heights 4th.

This capped another great season for all of the juniors at Stover Golf Club.
