Friday, October 11- Teignmouth Women 29 Totnes 32
TOTNES arrived at Teignmouth with just nine players, but in the true spirit of women’s rugby, a 10-a-side game was discussed and sorted.
The visitors were the first to score, quick hands out to their 10 resulted in an opening score, 0-5.
Totnes scored again but Teigns hit back through Avery, who scored on her first game for the club, 5-10.
It continued to go back and forth with Totnes scoring a third from a kick chase before Teignmouth were rewarded for their patience with a try from McLellan, making it 10-15.
A first converted try of the game took the hosts into the lead, prop Ball crossing the line and scrum-half Wreford kicking the additional two points.
Totnes added points either side of an injury stoppage that saw the game switch to 9-a-side, 17-27.
Ball and Wreford were instrumental for Teignmouth once again though, combining with great play and the latter was able to score under the posts.
18 exhausted players continued to put on a great game for the spectators, Totnes using the width to their advantage and taking the score to 22-32.
Wreford punched another hole and this time, converted her own try, cutting down Totnes’ lead to just three points.
Teignmouth thought they had then won the game at the death in a battle to reach the try-line, but the referee had other ideas, calling for a knock-on. Totnes kicked the ball out from the following scrum to clinch victory.
Shawna Ball and Jo Bowery were named as the forward and back of the match respectively.
Saturday, October 12- Tiverton 40 Teignmouth Men’s 1st XV 12
Teignmouth lost twice away at Tiverton at the end of last season and so were keen for retribution on their travels but to no avail.
The home team scored the first two tries of the game, missing the conversion on the second to take a 12-0 lead.
Tiverton’s strong defence was keeping Teigns at bay but two yellow cards in quick succession for high tackles gave the visitors a golden opportunity to hit back.
A Teignmouth scrum was won and went out to the wing for Scott Hooper to get them on the board, 12-5.
Tiverton added more points before the break with a penalty and an unconverted try making it 20-5.
Another pair of tries caused Teignmouth’s frustrations to rise but they channelled this into the game and 15, Force scored with 12, Mayne notching the conversion, 30-12.
As well as a pair of tries, a pair of cards were handed out, Teignmouth earning a first yellow and the Tiverton reaction ending with a red card for them.
Two more tries for the home team saw them further stamp their authority on the game and 40-12 was how it finished at Coronation Field.
