AMONGST the recent action at Stover Golf Club, there was a Seniors’ four ball-better ball open that took place on Friday 5. 164 players from 32 different clubs took part and they were met by varying conditions- the morning starters stayed dry but the later ones were caught in some heavy showers.

Two points covered the first seven players so it was extremely tight but Mike Richards and Barrie Palmer, of Whitsand Bay, prevailed with an impressive 45 points. Congratulations also go to Chris James as he carded a hole-in-one on the 13th with his trusty 8-iron.

The next day, 50 Stover members were up and at ‘em for the annual Early Bird Stableford. Competitors were greeted by a lovely, bright morning and it was Adam Foss who coped best with the early start, scoring 38 points.

Returning to the seniors’ section and the Doug Perry Cup took place on Monday- Christopher Neath (41pts) was at the fore of the 75-strong field.

On the ladies’ side of things, Pippa Martin took the honours in the 9-hole Stableford with 20 points whilst Cheryl Watson won the 18-hole event on 38 points. £51 was raised for the RNLI.

Finally, it was the turn of the Wednesday Stableford- 135 golfers taking to the course even if one eye was on the football that evening.

Ray Utting carded the best score of the day and won Division Three with 40 points, whilst Kieran Pyne (40pts) and John Ponsford (39pts) prevailed in Division One and Two respectively. There was also a BBQ and the clubhouse’s atmosphere was certainly enhanced by Ollie Watkins’ late winner.
