NEWTON Abbot Bowls’ Club have league title ambitions as their men’s A-Team continue their winning streak.

They made it seven victories out of eight in the MDL Premier League, beating Bitton Park A 10-4 at home. Kings A did win their game in hand which means Newton drop down to second but they are still firmly in the hunt for top spot.

That winning feel continues with the same team coming out on top in the Section 5 Men’s Top Club competition, beating Shaldon 3-2 on disciplines. The game went right down to the last wood of the game and it was Mark Howard who delivered the winning shot, just moments after it looked as if Ollie Lucas had done just that.

Newton Abbot now goes into the Open Quarter-Final stage and will play United Services at Home on August 3rd at 10.00am.

The men will once again face Shaldon but this time in the Section 5 Final of the Foxlands- the game is set to be played by July 20.

This positive trajectory of the A-Team seems to be rubbing off on the B-Team as they picked up a much-needed win, their second of the season. Kingsbridge came to town and Newton prevailed 11-3 in what will hopefully be the spark they need to build up a run of form and climb the table in the second half of the season.

Meanwhile, congratulations go to Steve Tipping who earned his 30th county point and qualifies for his county badge next season as a result- this will be presented to him when he plays his first game for Devon Men.

Steve achieved his point with Simon Boyce and Trevor Voisey playing with him against a Triple from Chudleigh. Trevor’s last wood did enough to win a tight game as the opposition’s skip was unable to change the head with his subsequent wood. This trio go on to the Section 5 final of the Minor Men’s Unbadged Triples now and await either a team from Abbrook Park or Shaldon.

Lastly, there are a few fixtures for the club to add to the diary.

The sheet has gone up in the club for the friendly against Tewkesbury, which will take place on Tuesday July 30 at 2pm.

At a later date, there are also two additional games, the first on Friday August 30 vs Blue Circle and the second on Saturday August 31 vs Pontymister Welfare, both at 1pm.
