NEWTON Abbot Athletics Club held their awards evening at Teigngrace Village Hall on November 22 for the 2023/24 cross-country campaign and the 2024 track and field season.
There was a great turnout of athletes with their parents there to show appreciation for their performances.
Starting with the cross-country and the U10 girls award went to Flora Hoskins, who showed determination and enjoyment. Ellie McLaughlin showed similar determination and always has a smile on her face, earning the U13 girls award and then it was Lauren Booker at U15 level having represented her school in the Devon Schools Championships.
William Slatcher was named as the U13 boy after a busy season, taking part in Devon Schools, Devon County and Westward League events. Talking of the Westward League and Paul Hindle earned the senior man award for his contributions there, showing his fitness is going in the right direction.
For the perpetual awards, the aforementioned duo of Ellie McLaughlin and William Slatcher won Female Champion and Male Champion respectively.
The final cross-country prize was the Endeavour Award, given to U13 boy Luca Shillabeer for his continual support for the U13 Boys team.
Over to the track and field awards and Flora Hoskins excelled at U10 level again, winning the prize for showing her enthusiasm for athletics and competing in sprints, hurdles and jumps and achieving personal bests. The U10 boy award went to Seth Darcy who trained hard and achieved personal bests in jumps, sprints and distance runs.
U11 girl was Lily Mortimore, who showed keenness to compete and achieved personal bests in jumps, sprints and distance whilst the U11 boy was Matias Henry, for showing keenness to compete and again, achieving personal bests in all his events.
U13 girl was Alice Culverhouse, who achieved standards and personal bests in long and high jump plus 100m and 200m sprints. Meanwhile, the U13 boy was Luca Shillabeer, who took part in 17 competitions and covered multiple events, achieving high standards.
Megan Johnson had an outstanding season and showed a high level of achievement in the multi-event Pentathlon, earning her the U15 girl award and George England showed good form in the sprints and long jump to claim the U15 boy award.
U17 women went the way of Lauren Booker, who had an excellent season and gained selection for multi-events, Devon Schools and Devon County, plus set a new club record in the heptathlon, triple jump and the long jump. Samuel Kelly was the U17 man having shown his enthusiasm in sprints and for achieving several personal bests.
U20/Seniors/Masters- Andy Morey, who competed in 15 competitions at a high standard.
To the perpetual trophies for the track and field section and Lauren Booker was named as girls champion for an outstanding season and competing at a high level for Devon, whilst Luca Shillabeer picked up another title in the form of boy’s champion.
Kay Shillabeer earned the Presidents’ Shield. This an award for someone who, outside of being a competing athlete, makes a substantial contribution in the fields of coaching/training and Kay Shillabeer has been the lead, taking the youngest members 8-11-year-olds along with encouraging parents to get involved.
Paul Hindle earned the Senior Rosemount Cup, owing to an outstanding performance in a coathlon, which is two decathlons in two days.
Penultimately, for the chairs award, Andy Morey claiming the male title for his support in competitions and helping younger athletes at competitions and at training, plus Lauren Booker as the female recipient for her outstanding season setting club records and competing at a national level.
Rounding off a successful evening were the committee awards, Ellie McLaughlin and Sam Kelly as the female and male winners respectively.
