The annual Shaldon and Teignmouth fireworks display will go ahead after all following a U-turn by Teignmouth Town Council.

Earlier this year, the viability of the popular event was thrown into doubt after Teignmouth Town Council’s events committee suggested it would not support the display at a meeting on January 7.

Shaldon Parish Councillor Jo Cumbley appealed to Teignmouth Town Council to reconsider its stance and an emergency meeting was held on February 5 to discuss the matter.

Since then, councillors from Teignmouth Town Council and Shaldon Parish Council have agreed that ‘the much-anticipated joint fireworks and bonfire event will proceed as planned this year, with support from both councils’ with a new funding model.

In the past, the bonfire and fireworks has been funded by partly by donations made on the night with additional resources provided by both Teignmouth Town Council and Shaldon Parish Council.

However, this year, the councils will be seeking sponsorship to financially support the event.

‘Sponsorship not only helps sustain the event but also fosters a sense of community involvement and pride,’ said Teignmouth Town Council and Shaldon Parish Council in a joint statement about this year’s fireworks and bonfire.

Sponsorship of the fireworks will be administered by Teignmouth Town Council while event sponsorship will be administered by Shaldon Parish Council.

The fireworks, which are launched from the Point Beach in Teignmouth, and themed bonfire on Shaldon beach will take place on Saturday November 1. The bonfire will be lit at 6:30pm with the fireworks display starting at 7pm.

The annual Teignmouth and Shaldon bonfire and fireworks is the only free-to-attend pyrotechnic event in the area. The hugely popular event attracts thousands of people who spend money in local businesses outside the main summer season.
