ORGANISERS are gearing up for this year’s Widecombe Fair.
The historic annual event is held on the second Tuesday of September.
This year’s main attraction will be local lumberjack Spike Milton and his team who will be demonstrating their sawmill skills and introducing visitors to the world of Timbersports.
Widecombe Fair dates back to the 19th century with first records dated 1850.
It remains a hugely popular event with both the local community and visitors coming from far afield.
Taking part this year will be the Wessex Warbow Society which will be demonstrating all aspects of the longbow as it was made and used in the Middle Ages.
Devon Axe Racing championships will also feature.
Other attractions include Uncle Tom Cobley downhill race, terrier racing, Maypole dancing with local school children.
Also in action will be the Dartmoor Hill Pony display team and Canine Capers dog agility.
Visitors will also see the traditional showing of animals as well as food and drink producers and the handicraft tent.
Run entirely by volunteers, each year proceeds from the fair go to support a number of local charities and good causes and in recent years these have included Widecombe Primary School, Widecombe Community Hall and Devon Air Ambulance.
The charity for this year is the Dartmoor Rescue Team who will be giving a display of the work they do on the moor.
Tickets for the fair on Tuesday September 10 starting at 9am can be bought from the website www.widecombefair.com in advance or on the gate.
