REGIONAL 2 TRIBUTE SOUTH WEST

Teignmouth RFC 15-39 Wadebridge Camels

WITH the weather poor and December looming, numbers were low both on and off the pitch for Teignmouth RFC- the 2nd XV game was cancelled to allow enough players to make up the team, writes Judi Hellier.

Teigns gained possession from the off and kicked for territory and when Wadebridge Camels were awarded the advantage, they ran down the wing for an early score, 0-5.

A lineout for the visitors in home corner brought a second try of the day as they extended their lead to 0-10.

Teignmouth were able to put on a good handling display and pushed into the Camels’ 22, only to lose the eventual lineout. As it continued to go back and forth, Jack Mayne put Teigns on the board, kicking for the posts to make it 3-10.

It didn’t take long for Wadebridge to hit back though and they were able to cross for a third time, 3-15.

Captain Pete Parsons was forced off through injury which was a big blow for the hosts, George Franklin stepping up as skipper in his absence.

Possession regularly went between the two teams and a knock-on allowed the Camels to end the half how they started it, with a try, but this one was converted, taking it to 3-20 at the break.

Adding a converted try within minutes of the second half kicking off extended Wadebridge’s advantage before strong Teigns pressure paid off, debutant Burton scoring in the corner to the delight of the home crowd.

Two more tries and a conversion sealed the 39 points for the Camels but Teignmouth were able to reduce the arrears before the final whistle blew.

Teign’s number 18, Wright, was able to bring some joy to the locals, chipping in with a try and Mayne slotted the conversion, rounding the score off to 15-39.

George Franklin, playing at number six, took the Man of the Match award for Teignmouth having filled in for the stricken Parsons as the captain.
