NEWTON Abbot Spurs 1st XI enjoyed a 10th win of their current South West Peninsula League Premier East campaign on Saturday, November 9.

Spurs visited the Ethan Berry Pavilion, the home of Middlezoy Rovers, before returning to South Devon with all three points in tow.

In a rather eventful game, there were red cards shown to Middlezoy duo George Turner and Liam Winter in the first half, not to mention that Oscar Albano was sin-binned after the break as well. As is often the case, the two clubs weren’t quite in agreement on their social media pages.

Either way, after a goalless first 45, Marc Revell’s men made the two-man advantage count to win 3-0. Harry French notched a brace for the visitors with an own goal in there as well and Spurs march onwards as one of the leading teams in the division.

The solo mid-week fixture at this level can’t have any bearing on the pair’s standings in the table so Spurs and Middlezoy head into next week in fourth and 14th respectively.

Spurs boast a very strong record of 10-1-3 from the first 14 games and are firmly in the hunt for top spot along with the likes of Cullompton Rangers, Sidmouth Town and Okehampton Argyle. The minor setback is that only one team gets promoted and last year that honour went to a rampant Ivybridge Town, but the SWPL Premier East title race is a lot tighter this time around.

For Middlezoy meanwhile, they have eight points from 10 games and could jump three, four or even five spots when they have played their games in hand.

Rovers will visit Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police on November 16 with Spurs’ local rivals Bovey Tracey and Teignmouth also going on the road, but they themselves have a weekend off.
