NEWTON Abbot Spurs completed the double over local rivals Bovey Tracey AFC with victory at Mill Marsh Park on the weekend.
Owen Green scored both goals for Marc Revell’s side as they overcame Bovey in the Walter C Parson SW Peninsula League.
Casting minds all the way back to early August and the pair met on the opening day of the season at The Rec. Braces from Callum Noyce and Toby Pullman set Spurs on their way and they continue to challenge for the title to this day.
This latest result leaves Spurs in fourth on 44 points, 10 points behind leaders Sidmouth Town but with four games in hand to cash in on, and Bovey in 10th. Their 29-point tally has them in a battle with the likes of Crediton United and Torridgeside AFC with a strong end to the campaign able to bring them a top-half finish.
Elsewhere in the Peninsula League, that aforementioned duo of Crediton and Torridgeside both won 2-1 at home interestingly enough, the latter overtaking Bovey as a result.
Crediton beat rock-bottom Axminster Town, for whom Bradley Conway scored, whilst Torridgeside overcame Middlezoy Rovers. Tyler Evans-Ioude and George Shapland scored for the victors and Liam Winter struck for Middlezoy.
Spurs’ win took them above Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police but their league position didn’t actually change as a 6-0 success for Bridport FC saw them jump two places.
Joe Charles (2), Fred Parsons, Stefanos Stavrianos and substitute George Geraghty (2) were on target for Bridport who are now level with Newton Spurs on both points and goal difference. The pair both have 44 points, one more than Stoke who didn’t play this weekend.
As well as this quartet of league games, there was a cup clash that pitted Premier West against Premier East. Honiton Town represented the Premier East well, winning 3-0 away at Newquay AFC to move on to the next stage.
Looking ahead now and the Mid-Devon trio are all scheduled to take to the field on Saturday 8.
Teignmouth AFC can do Bovey a favour when they visit Crediton United, having had their clash with Sidmouth Town postponed last weekend.
Talking of Bovey and they host Middlezoy Rovers, a side four places and nine points behind them in the league standings, presenting a good opportunity to bounce back for Matt Hayden’s men.
On to Spurs and then head to Simmons Park to take on an Okehampton Argyle side that are sliding down the table after a rough winter period. That is sixth place hosting fourth and the top six are all playing each other on a hugely significant afternoon.
Second-placed Cullompton Rangers go to first-placed Sidmouth Town and whilst the leadership can’t be changed, the deficit could be slashed to a single point.
The other two, Bridport (3rd) and Stoke Gabriel & Torbay Police (5th), go to battle at Broadley Lane with just that single point between them. The table could look very different by this time next week as these rivals all face off.
Other Peninsula League fixtures see Axminster Town take on Honiton Town and Bishops Lydeard hosting Elburton Villa.
