DAWLISH Women’s Walking Football Club were represented by three of their teams in the latest round of the Devon Walking Football League, on Sunday, November 17.

At The Exwick Hub, the over-40s team, known as The Cygnets, started the day in third place in League One, three points behind leaders Plymouth Argyle Ladies.

The afternoon’s matches saw them win one, lose one and draw 3. The loss, a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Argyle, was a closely fought game with Dawlish keeper Jacquie Cooper making some excellent saves, only to be beaten by the last kick of the 12-minute game. They have dropped to fourth place on goal difference.

In League Two, The Swans resumed proceedings at the summit with The Fledgies in fifth place. The Swans had a tough afternoon. They drew the first two games against Modbury Vixens and The Fledgies without anyone scoring.

They didn’t seem to be playing with their usual rhythm but a change of tactics in the game against Teign Bees saw them back to winning ways with a 1–0 victory. The team, somewhat older than most of their opposition at 60+, saved their best until last with a well-earned draw against their closest competitors, Mid Devon.

The outstanding performance of the day, undoubtedly, came from The Fledgies. They lost two games, drew one but also had their first two wins of the season against Modbury and Teign Bees. During the final match of the day, they were supported from the sidelines by the club’s other teams and the final whistle was met with celebratory cheers.

Their progress since September is clear to see. They have moved up the league into third with The Swans on top still and yet to concede a goal.

The club are grateful to Dawlish Town Council for the grant funding awarded to enable their entry in the competition. The next games take place in January.
