FOLLOWING the death of Ken Day, a former Gents Captain at Ipplepen Bowls Club, an annual internal competition was set up in his memory with Dennis Squires kindly donating a trophy.

It was arranged that this competition would take place in May each year (Ken’s birth month), so this match was played on Sunday 26 May.

At the end of play, current captain David Northwood announced that the winning team consisted of Mike Veale, Mo Stevens and Lynne Sellers.

It was essential that chocolate cake was served as this was Ken’s favourite, and a great afternoon was had by all honouring a good friend.

Switching over to Bovey Tracey and it was a particularly busy week for a number of their teams.

There was a mixed friendly against Okehampton on home soil, with the visitors winning on all four rinks by 76 shots to 58 overall.

The next match was another home game in the Mid-Devon League against Newton Abbot B. The aggregate scores were very close and, although Bovey lost two rinks and won one with the fourth drawn, the overall result worked out in their favour. Just three shots separated the two with Bovey taking nine league points to Newton’s five.

A Walding, R Bailey, C Shorland, P Joy 19-19; D Anderson, S Callard, L Hignett, T Ridgewell 14-22; L Fullbrook, C Miall, K Breame, D Saunders 20-25; J Farley, P Cridge, K Lockett, M Webber 23-7.

Next up are the ladies who welcomed Paignton A in a South Devon League clash. The opponents proved too strong on the day, running out winners on all three rinks and collating all 10 league points.

C Towle, J Ridgewell, S Johnson 14-24; D Bailey, Y Stanford, H Call 10-13; S Breame, M Bolt, K Callard 13-19.

It was then the men's turn with an Over 55s match at Newton Abbot on a rain-affected morning. Eventually, the match was able to be completed with Bovey winning on one rink and drawing on the other. Match score, Bovey T 43 shots - N Abbot 27. League points, Bovey T 7 - N Abbot 1.

P Cridge, S Callard, R Bailey 20-20; K Lockett, D Saunders, P Joy 23-7.

There were two more mixed friendlies at home to conclude the week, one against a strong Plymstock team and the other against Dawlish Marina. The latter was hampered by rain but Bovey still emerged victorious, winning by three rinks to one and 80 shots to 48. Plymstock meanwhile came out on top by three rinks to one and 74 shots to 51.

Lastly, congratulations are in order for Chris Towle, Les Hignett and Heidi Call who have progressed to the second round of the Burma Star mixed triples competition.
