AFTER the disappointing weather affected finals weekend, the postponed matches were thankfully able to be completed during this week.

In the three games that were played on the original day, Chris Towle and Dave Johnson won the Mixed Drawn Pairs, beating Sue Davies and Steve Callard by 26 shots to 12.

Serial winner Phil Joy was a worthy winner in the Men’s 4 Wood final against Keith Lockett- Keith mounted a fightback but Phil continued to score well and it finished 21-9.

Talking of Phil and alongside Andy Walding, he beat Keith Lockett and Kenny Breame to win the Men’s Drawn Pairs, the final score being 20-18 after an end-to-end affair in the deteriorating conditions.

Now on to the rearranged events and in the ladies' 4 woods, Sue Johnson proved too strong for Kath Callard, powering to a victory by 21 shots to seven. In the men's handicap, Keith Lockett raced into a 13-shot lead only for Andy Walding to mount his expected fightback, reducing the deficit to only 5 shots before Keith held on to win by 21 shots to 14.

Heidi Call played Deb Simpson in the ladies' handicap in a match in which the scoring followed a remarkably similar pattern to the men's. Heidi opened an 11-shot early lead but Deb rallied to get within one shot before Heidi ran out and won by 21 to 18.

Back with the men, Roger Bailey was on form in the 2 woods, overcoming Andy Walding by 16 shots to five. A closer match in the ladies' 2 woods saw Heidi Call beat mum, Sue Johnson, with a strong finish by 14 shots to 11. The ladies' drawn pairs final was a rather one-sided affair with Heidi Call and Sarah Breame winning by 28 shots to six against Chris Towle and Deborah Bailey, who were hampered by Chris suffering a knee injury.

The final match was in the Ley Cup where Roger Bailey put in another strong performance to win by two sets to nil against Mark Webber.

Last Saturday in weather which couldn't have contrasted more than the previous week, the official closing of the green took place, marked by the traditional President's v Captain's team challenge. A brilliant turnout of 40-plus members necessitated the creation of five rinks with the matches enjoyable and friendly yet competitive with the president's team winning on four rinks and the other drawn.

This week will see the start of work to dig up the area of the green nearest the clubhouse in order to investigate and cure drainage problems encountered during recent seasons. Hopefully, by the start of next season, the green will be back to its best.
