Crowds gathered around Teignmouth’s war memorial on Sunday (November 10) for a poignant service to commemorate the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces and civilians during times of conflict.
A procession of standard bearers, armed forces cadets, scouts and guides marched from the Point along the seafront to the War Memorial where Reverend Jamie Redfern from Teignmouth Baptist Church led a service of remembrance.
Wreaths were laid by dignitaries including Teignmouth Mayor councillor Cate Williams and Teignmouth Town Councillor, on behalf of MP Martin Wrigley. Representatives from organisations including the police and fire service also laid wreaths as well as groups ranging from local bikers to the Richard Newton Hall and Teignmouth Rugby Club.
Across the Den, a garden made of crocheted and knitted poppies, had been installed by volunteers from Teignmouth Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI). The poppy flowerbed will remain outside the bowling club for 11 days.
Standards were lowered for two minutes’ silence before dignitaries and local organisations laid wreaths at the base of the war memorial.
The Remembrance Sunday parade and service was organised by Brian Hall MBE, chair of the Civic Remembrance Committee, with Teignmouth Town Council and the Royal British Legion.
