A back beach takeaway in Teignmouth that was gutted by a fire earlier this year is to move to a nearby pub.
LJs Beach Shack will reopen from the New Quay Inn further up the back beach with a new name: LJs Kitchen.
LJs owners, Louis Walker and fiancé Amy Howse, said ‘unforeseen circumstances’ meant it would no longer be viable to run the business from its previous location by the Point car park on Teignmouth’s back beach.
The couple said moving to the New Quay Inn will give customers a choice of indoor and outdoor seating and they reassured customers that they will still have a takeaway hatch right on the beach.
The use of a larger kitchen will also enable LJs to extend its menu, they added.
After the fire on January 12, the local community rallied round to support Louis and Amy. Many turned out the following day to help clear up the debris and a GoFundMe page generated £6,765 to help them re-establish their business.
By the end of January, the walls of the shack had already been built back up ready for the roof to be replaced.
LJs said it had spent a lot of the donated money on getting the fire-ravaged building back to a ‘useable standard’. However, after making some ‘really difficult decisions’ they said they were left with no choice but to move due to the ‘situation with the landlord of the property’. The couple said any remaining funds would be donated to a local charity.
‘We want to express our deepest gratitude to our amazing community, friends, family and local business for all your financial and physical support during this extremely difficult time,’ said Amy and Louis.
LJs Kitchen at the New Quay Inn will open on Saturday March 29 with a day of free food and music to say thank you to the local community for supporting the business.
