NEWTON Abbot auctioneers Rendells reported on superb trade at their cattle sale at Newton Livestock Market on September 4.
All sections and cattle forward were experiencing great demand with buyers in attendance from all across the Southwest. Many vendors were extremely pleased with the prices achieved which were well above expectations and it was pleasing to see vendors returning to the market who haven’t sold at Newton for a long time.
A fantastic run of cattle in the prime ring from Mr JP Horswell, St Budeaux sold to a fast trade with a top of 285ppk for a Farm Assured 620kg South Devon steer realising £1767.00.
Racing away to the top price per head was a 690kg Aberdeen Angus steer from the same home selling to £1918.20. All the prime steers forward averaged 278ppk and £1736.33.
In the store cattle ring, a tremendous bunch of four Non-Farm Assured seventeen-month Limousin x steers from Mr G Vallance, Bickington sold to £1670. Closely following was a superb forward bunch of four sixteen-month South Devon steers from the same home selling to £1610.
A cracking run of South Devon cattle from DG, M & C Northey, Ermington attracted strong interest with a run of well covered sixteen-month South Devon steers selling to £1420 with a single nineteen-month Hereford steer racing away to £1400 and younger fifteen-month-old South Devon’s to £1140 with fourteen-month-old South Devons to £1100.
Mr E M Sleep, Blackawton had a pair of twenty-month South Devon steers top at £1200 with Mr J W H Vallance, Burlestone hot on the heels at £1190 for four seventeen-month-old South Devon steers. Messrs NM Ekers, East Allington sold the best of their steers to £1090 for an Aberdeen Angus cross steer.
All store steers penned in the market today resulted in an overall average of £1209.86
A larger run of suckler and dairy cross heifers forward than of late with the best realising £1300 for a single twenty-month Aberdeen Angus x heifer from NM Ekers. Messrs DG, M & C Northey continued their fine trade in the heifers with sixteen-month-old South Devons racing to £1140. Mr J W H Vallance’s heifers sold to a top of £1100 (15mo) with other bunches selling to £1070 and Mr T Clinnick, Ermington selling the best of their Limousin cross heifers to £1020 (14mo).
Cows and Calves met a selective trade with a top of £1600 for a 2020 born Aberdeen Angus cow with April born heifer calf at foot for Messrs RJ & J Tully, Waddeton who sold other outfits to £1500.
