Representatives from Extinction Rebellion Teignmouth joined protesters from across the south west to mourn the death of the environment in Bath last month.
Aimed at raising awareness of the nature crisis, ‘Funeral for Nature’ was led by activist performance group, Red Rebel Brigade.
The dramatic procession through Bath’s city centre began with 400 ‘red rebels’ dressed to symbolise the Code Red status of biodiversity loss given by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC).
A green funeral pyre followed, carrying a white Mother Earth figure. This was followed by biodiversity champion Chris Packham, who led a cortege of mourners dressed in black to the sound of a funeral march drumbeat.
A spokesperson from XR Teignbridge said: ‘It’s hard to know how to make a difference, but by getting the message out there emotionally through a creative hard-hitting spectacle such as this it is hoped we will move more people to action.’
