TWO giants of music will be celebrated by Teign Choral Society at St Michael’s Church in Teignmouth next Saturday (May 11) .
The society will be presenting a tribute concert featuring the music of Karl Jenkins, who turns 80 this year, and also that of Andrew Lloyd-Webber a man who has done so much to keep musical theatre at the forefront of our culture
Under the direction of David Bowles the choir will perform Karl Jenkins’ Motets.
The composer himself defined a Motet as “a piece of sacred music for unaccompanied voices” - Although the arrangement David has chosen does allow accompaniment.
These are elements taken from Adiemus, The Armed Man, The Peacemakers, Palladio and others, which will be instantly recognisable, featuring as they do Jenkins’ hypnotic melodies and rhythms.
The Phantom of the Opera is one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most performed works, his wonderful music, together with the lyrics of Charles Hart, Mike Batt and Richard Stilgoe, bring to life the fascinating tale of the outstandingly talented artist and musician who, because of disfigurement, withdrew to the labyrinth beneath the Paris Opera House, remaining a sinister presence.
The choir and talented soloists Demelza Bellamy, Naomi Heffer, Peter Wood, will sing seven songs that encapsulate the story, ending with the powerful Phantom theme itself.
Tickets for the 7.30pm performance are priced at £10 and are available from Ashleigh Way Post Office, Teign Music (Carlton Place), Regent Style (Regent Street) and on the door on the night.
