TORBAY Gilbert and Sullivan Society will be presenting two short Sullivan operas at Torquay’s Little Theatre, Torquay between July 27 to 29.
The show Curtain Raisers features two short operas that were originally written as a tasters to be performed before the main opera performance took place.
However, by putting them together they now constitute a full evening’s entertainment.
The first half features the ever popular Trial by Jury, a comic opera in one act, first produced in March 1875, at London's Royalty Theatre. The story concerns a breach of promise of marriage lawsuit in which the judge and legal system are the objects of lighthearted satire.
This is followed little known and seldom performed piece The Zoo, which features wmusic by Sullivan but words written by B.C. Stephenson (also known as Bolton Rowe)
The action of The Zoo is set in the London Zoo and centres around the visitors and staff - and has no actual animals taking part.
Both pieces have charm and humour as well as some beautiful melodies as would be expected with Sullivan’s music.
Tickets for the performances are on sale at The Little Theatrevia the website www.toadslittletheatre.co.uk, in person or by calling the box office on 01803 299330
