A CONCERT of seasonal music will take place at an historic chapel in Ashburton later this month.
On Saturday, December 14, the Ashburton Singers, directed by Bridget Ansell, will be joined by pianist Matt Davies in town’s the Chapel of St Lawrence for a concert of festive music to warm the heart and soul.
On the programme are many native traditional tunes, including the high-spirited Boar’s Head Carol, The Sussex Carol and the Sans Day Carol, along with melodies drawn from the German, Czech and Galician traditions.
Contemporary pieces are represented by James Whitbourn (Winter’s Wait) and a lilting setting of words by Padraic Colum (O Men from the Fields) while from other traditions the singers will present Christmas music from the Orthodox Liturgy by Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Lvovsky as well as the lovely Shepherd’s Farewell from L’Enfance du Christ by Berlioz.
No Christmas programme would be complete without a carol by Sir John Rutter and this year we sing his “What sweeter music can we bring than a carol?”
The acoustics in this lovely Chapel are perfect for a small choir and a warm welcome awaits you with mince pies and mulled wine served during the interval. The concert is free with a retiring collection.
Founded in 1975 the Ashburton Singers perform concerts across South Devon. Their repertoire comprises accompanied and unaccompanied music from the 16th century up to and including the 21st century.
