AN AMATEUR theatrical group are celebrating their diamond jubilee this week with their annual pantomime, Treasure Island, currently playing at Leusdon Memorial Hall above Poundsgate.

Formed 1965 The Moorland Merrymakers are still going strong today with around sixty members all local on Dartmoor and the surrounding area.

Rehearsals for Treasure Island, produced by Luke Fursdon, started in September.

Throughout most of this time the cast have had the extra challenge of getting to the hall due to the closure of Ponsworthy bridge, and some recent cold weather, however that has not deterred the fun and laughter once they get there.

Producer Luke, in true pirate speak, said “I've sailed with this crew for 30 years, since I be but a wee 10-year-old, watchin’ many shipmates come an’ go.

“The spirit o’ community and the commitment shown be what makes this band o’ hearties such a treasure to be part o’.”

Annually the group donates profits to national, regional, and local charities and good causes which last year included Devon Air Ambulance, Widecombe Pre-School, Dartmoor Search and Rescue Ashburton, Rowcroft Hospice, the Parish Link and Friends of Widecombe School.

This year the Merrymakers have facilitated a sponsorship arrangement with Dawlish-based Ryders bakery to supply the pasties that are served at the interval. The bakery was established in 1972, and they now have a shop in Bovey Tracey.

Chairman Rob Steemson said “Once again, we welcome some new members, which is great news whilst we also celebrate two other milestones. This is our producer Luke Fursdon` s thirtieth year whilst for Lloyd Mortimore this is his fiftieth.

“Blending theirs, and others experience and knowledge with new members is vital for the success and future of the group as we head towards our centenary - oh yes, we are!”

Opening night is tomorrow (Saturday, December 7) and the show runs for a week finishing on December 14. Such is the popularity of the annual panto there is limited ticket availability - so email [email protected] or check the group’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/194723088326/
