It’s that most wonderful time of the year and it can mean only one thing. Yep - it’s Panto season!!
This year’s offering at the Princess Theatre is Jack and the Beanstalk, a more modern of the pantomimes from Jordan Productions, but no less endearing.
This classic pantomime tale, brought to life with vibrant colors, catchy tunes, and plenty of audience participation, is a perfect treat for families during this festive season.
The dazzling costumes and elaborate set designs transport the audience to a fantastical world where we meet many colourful characters along our journey, none more so than the eccentric and hilarious Trott family with Michael Neilson as Dame Trott with her wildly exotic costumes, Jack (of the title) played by Sister Act star Isabel Canning and Silly Billy perfectly portrayed by Matthew Curnier.
Matthew really is the star of the show as he is the glue (or milkshake) that binds, appearing constantly throughout the show to offer quips, silly dancing and zany antics to keep the children (and adults) thoroughly entertained.
Other notable performances were Matt Lapinskas’ villainous giant’s sidekick Fleshcreep, cleverly living up to his namesake, Jennie Dale’s ‘sweet as a Christmas cracker’ Fairy Fuchsia and John Altman - Nasty Nick Cotton in Eastenders as King Custard - who possibly might have missed some of the choreography sessions? All this backed up by brilliantly energetic, enthusiastic and talented dancers who add flair and flow.
Surprisingly this year, one of the usual staples of Panto segments was not present - the 12 days of Christmas. Now whether this is because of ‘elf and safety’ with the risk of toilet rolls flying around the auditorium - possibly - but this has been replaced with an equally if not funnier scene involving a milkshake producing machine and fear not, there is still the usual mix of comedy, sing-a-longs, innuendo and crazy Panto silliness.
The production’s special effects are truly magical, whether its the towering beanstalk that grows right before your eyes or the ferocious Giant - who really needs to be seen to be believed - is technical wizardry and proof of what this incredible theatre is capable of.
Jack and the Beanstalk is a fun-filled and heartwarming show that captures the spirit of pantomime. It’s a great way to spend a festive evening in a theatre that brings family and friends together, so make sure you start Christmas early or just warm your spirits with the show which is appearing until Saturday, January 4 2025.
Merry Christmas!!
