TEIGN Choral Society will be presenting their Spring concert on May 10 at St Michael’s Church in Teignmouth and it promises to be very much a concert of contrasts.
The evening concert will feature two very different musical genres - the very sacred of nineteenth century Paris and the nostalgia and enjoyment evoked by the skill and confidence of musical theatre from the 1930s onwards.
Under the baton of musical director David Bowles, and featuring baritone Peter Wood and the soprano Demelza Bellamy as soloists, the first half will emphasise the deeply spiritual melodies and harmonies of French composer Gabriel Faure, who was born 1845.
His Requiem, inspired by the recent deaths of his parents sometimes seems languid and calm but there is dynamism too, indeed Libera Me (Free Me) was actually sung in an episode of the popular television series Inspector Morse.
Cantique de Jean Racine is well known and loved and local composer Ben Heffer contributes a lovely piece to start the evening.
The second half, of songs from the stage and screen, ranges from the bounce and cheer of We’re a Couple of Swells from Easter Parade through to the longing of Over the Rainbow from the Wizard of Oz to the regretful reminiscences of Autumn Leaves.
Teign Choral Society are a friendly choir based in Teignmouth They perform two concerts a year - at Christmas, with both choir and audience carols and the May spring concert with its mix of serious and light music.
Tickets for the 7.30pm concert, which include programme and refreshments, are priced at £10 and can be obtained from Regent Style in Regent Street, Ashleigh Way Post Office, Teign Music in Carlton Place and at the venue’s door on the night.
