A SMALL school with a remarkable reach - that’s the verdict from Ofsted following their October visit to Broadhempston Primary School.
The school was awarded an outstanding grade in both the Behaviour and Attitudes and Personal Development categories which demonstrates its unwavering commitment to fostering both academic excellence and personal growth among its pupils.
The report highlights the school’s exceptional ability to nurture well-rounded individuals who are not only high achievers but also compassionate, responsible citizens.
The pupils’ empathy is evident as they actively seek ways to make a positive difference in their school and community, demonstrating resilience and problem-solving skills that will serve them throughout their lives.
"We are incredibly proud of our staff, children and parent community for this outstanding achievement”, said Academy Head, Karen Barlow.
“The report reflects the hard work, dedication and passion that everyone at Broadhempston puts into making our school a place where pupils want to be, where we can help them not only excel academically but also grow as individuals who will contribute positively to society."
The inspection commended the school’s culture of high expectations, noting that pupils of all ages reflect these standards in their behaviour and attitudes. With exemplary conduct both in and out of the classroom, pupils take responsibility for their actions and support one another in their learning journey. The school’s approach to fostering strong character is also evident in its focus on developing leadership skills and encouraging pupils to go the extra mile.
A particularly striking feature of the school’s ethos is the strong voice that pupils have in shaping their own learning experiences. Through a vibrant programme of extracurricular opportunities, residential trips, regular forest school sessions and collaborative meet-ups with other trust schools, pupils are empowered to build confidence and thrive.
This holistic approach to education ensures that school life is rich, varied, and memorable.
The curriculum is described as ambitious, broad and memorable and carefully designed to engage pupils with detailed knowledge across a wide range of subjects. The school’s early literacy program is particularly effective, with pupils almost universally proficient readers by the end of Year 1 thanks to the determined support provided by staff.
Furthermore, the school’s commitment to inclusion shines through in the tailored support provided for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities. Whether addressing speech and language needs or providing social and emotional support, the school ensures that every pupil receives the help they require to succeed.
The report also praises the school’s remarkable attendance record, with pupils, including those who are disadvantaged, attending school regularly and enthusiastically. The high level of attendance is a direct result of the welcoming, supportive, and engaging environment that the school fosters.
The Ofsted inspection concluded by stating that pupils at Broadhempston are exceptionally well prepared for life outside of school.
The range and quality of opportunities for pupils to develop leadership skills and become active citizens were described as exceptional. As a result, pupils develop good character and a strong sense of responsibility, positioning them to make a positive impact on their doorstep and beyond.
