ONE brave seven-year-old from Stover School who suffers from a chronic condition is about to embark on a one-mile charity walk.

Lucas Trice, who suffers from Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip, is teaming up with his teachers and classmates along with Exeter Chiefs’ mascot and paralympic swimmer Gemma Almond for the walk.

On March 1, the team of walkers will be marching around the school’s campus in a bid to raise awareness and funds.

The youngster’s mum Natalie was surprised about the lack of information available about the condition and decided to write a book and set up the charity, DDH UK.

Lucas has been subject to five major operations and spent a year in casts, harnesses and wheelchairs.

The condition is caused when the hip joint fails to develop correctly and two to three in every 1,000 infants will require treatment.

‘If I can walk a mile after all the operations I have had, anyone can.

‘I am really excited about the walk, it is going to be lots of fun and I hope the money we raise helps other kids with poorly hips,’ said Lucas.

Mum Natalie said: ‘We are delighted that the school is getting on board with the charity and are hopeful that the walk will allow us to reach the £5,000 needed to register with the Charity Commission so we can take our work even further.’

Head of prep school at Stover David Burt said: ‘Lucas is an incredible little boy who is very much a part of not only Year 2, but the whole school.’

It is hoped that the walk – entitled Warrior Walk – will become an annual event at the school.
