Teignmouth RFC Women 19 Withycombe 78
WITHYCOMBE arrived thin on the ground with just nine players so Teignmouth lent them one to ensure the match could go ahead at 10-a-side, writes Judi Hellier.
Withy were very quick of the mark when one of their borrowed players opened the game by quickly going down the wing and scoring to take an early lead 0-5. The same player then found a gap in the defence and took the opportunity for a second try which was converted, 0-12.
Teigns captain Jo Bowery responded with a try for the hosts and this was converted by 9, Wreford for 7-12.
Withy’s 12 crossed for her third of the day from a scrum and a poor kicked was then pounced on for a 7-24 lead.
Bowery made an excellent tackle and 14, Humphries demonstrated great rucking to turn over the ball. The game then paused for an injury and when it recommenced, Humphries scored, 12-24.
Withy added two more and then an intercepted try from Wreford was the final score of the first half, taking the teams into the break at 19-36.
Teigns continued their battle and were seen pushing up. 15, Avery put in some great tackles, one of which was in the 22 and saved a certain try. Teigns had a scrum on the half-way line and lost the ball backwards, then knocked on in their own 22.
Teigns defence forced a penalty. 13, Dunn appeared to be wearing dancing shoes as she made her way through four Withy players successfully. However, Withy continued with their high-scoring game and created a final score of 19-78.
Forward to the match went to two, Ellen Vernel and back of the match to 14, Enya Humphries, who is pictured.
