TEIGNMOUTH RFC men’s 1st XV have to pick themselves up from a 31-20 defeat at Truro ahead of Saturday’s Bitton Park date with South West Two leaders Topsham.
Topsham are yet to drop a point whilst Teignmouth have gone seven games without a win.
There was no score at all during the first 25 minutes at St Clements’ Hill. Truro scored first and by half time were 12-8 up. Alex Ford was mauled over for Teignmouth’s try and Jack Mayne booted a penalty.
It was all Teignmouth after the break with tries for Jamie Collins then Jack Bowen, again, after a maul and again, converted by Mayne for a 20-12 lead.
Pete Bilham went close for Teignmouth but was held-up over the line.
Truro stepped-up a notch in the final quarter to snatch victory.
Pete Parsons, the Teignmouth skipper, was a frustrated spectator– and not just because he was sidelined by an injury.
“We threw away a good opportunity,” said Parsons.
Adding, “Fair play to Truro, who never stopped fighting.”
Elsewhere, Teignmouth’s women were beaten 26-51 by Kingsbridge on the 14th.
Kingsbridge opened the scoring from a penalty and added a second try after a great team move.
Wilson, at number 13, then made a break to get Teigns on the board- Wreford converting to make it 7-10.
With Teignmouth being penalised and making mistakes here and there, the visitors were able to cross the white line a few more times, taking their points tally to 29.
Avery pulled one back for the hosts but Kingsbridge then took advantage of a yellow card to add another couple of scores.
The impressive Sutcliffe ran the pitch to add a third Teigns try with Wreford adding the extra two points, before another two unconverted tries for Kingsbridge further extended the margin.
Teignmouth concluded the scoring courtesy of prop Ball, but it was the South Hams-based side who earned the victory
