CELEBRATIONS and special events are being held throughout 2024 to commemorate the Teignmouth Golf club centenary. A highlight of the calendar occurred on May 17, when 170 people attended an evening with a five-course gourmet dinner, speeches, a comedian, a saxophonist and special guests including the chair of England Golf and the president of Devon Golf.
Other events being held include ‘100 holes for a hundred years’ on June 20, when captains Hannah Stephens and Phil Waggett will each attempt to play 100 holes (equating to just short of 6 rounds) from sunrise to sunset. This is to raise funds for the captains’ charities - Rowcroft Hospice and Alzheimer’s UK. The pair intend to walk and complete all the holes and are hoping for caddies and support teams offering food and drinks to follow them around.
Elsewhere at the club, the competition season has begun and the course is in immaculate condition. Earlier in May for example, the Devon Championships were hosted by Teignmouth and superb golf was played by the very best in the County.
A Teignmouth trio consisting of Sean Mason, Tom Papworth and Todd Radford recently won the Club Team Champion Challenge Cup, qualifying for the England Golf National Finals as a result. This will be held on
Congratulations to the Teignmouth team consisting of Sean Mason, Tom Papworth and Todd Radford who won the Club Team Champion Challenge Cup and now qualify through to the England Golf National Finals. This will be held on Saturday 21 & Sunday 22 September at Stanton on the Wolds Golf Club, where they’ll be representing Teignmouth and Devon too.
Bad weather has had a say on the ladies’ section competitions so far but the winners haven’t been deterred either way. Chrissie Cornish for example, won the foundation brooch, whilst Sarah Plunkett and Hannah Stephens teamed up to win the Spring Greensomes. That duo, along with second-place pair, Kathryn Protheroe and Lynne Blandford, now qualify for the Warren Crocus.
The winner of the Lucas Cup this year was Rosie Jago and the Betty Burdett Salver was won by Hannah Stephens.
Moving over to the men’s side of things and the team are battling away in the South Devon League, currently sitting third in the table. The fourth match of the campaign took place over the weekend and that was drawn 3.5-3.5 against The Warren. Meanwhile, they were beaten by a strong Torquay side at Dartmouth Golf Club in the Palairet Trophy on Sunday.
Board Competition winners in recent weeks include Ian Brown and Rob Cherry in the Jordan Lloyd foursomes, Dan Booker in the Hackhunters’ Cup and Craig O’Dwyer in the Syndey Cup.
