DAINTON Park Golf Club held their annual Captain’s Charity Day last month in aid of the British Heart Foundation.
Linking with the charity, the theme this year was to wear something red and the members really embraced the occasion. There was plenty of fancy dress on show from an air hostess to a Scottish Clansman, a lady in red to a bottle of a well-known tomato ketchup brand!
On a wonderfully warm, sunny day, the golf competition started with the first tee at 7:30am all the way through until 2pm. 50 teams, comprising 200 members, entered the Texas Scramble and 50 was the winning score as well.
Jason Chilcott, Rob Frost, Neil Redshaw and Terry Taylor came out on top with the 50 points and the icing on the cake was a hole-in-one at the 15th, his second at the club.
There was a prize up for grabs on every hole ranging from nearest the pin, longest drives, nearest the line, nearest the loo, nearest “Clemo”, nearest the flagpole and canoe. There was also ‘Beat the Pro’ on the 8th hole with Head Professional Richard Woods spinning the wheel to learn his fate. A left-handed shot, using a junior club or a putter were just some of the different challenges awaiting him.
On the first tee, there was a particularly interesting Vintage Golf Club Challenge. The 1960s’ Walter Hagen driver was the most selected club and a lot of players managed to get it more than 250 yards, it was downhill on hard ground but even so.
Up-and-coming junior Harry Fuller struck a gentle fade ‘out of the screws’ over 200 yards into the centre of the fairway and it was Connor Bagnall who hit it the furthest, 315 yards to be precise, long and left of the target flag and nearly in the water.
Some players elected for the ‘safety’ of the 1930’s irons with the ‘Cochranes Super’ 1 iron proving most tempting. Ben Gauntlett managed to hit it 262 yards with that antique stick - he must’ve found the very small ‘sweet spot’.
The members were treated to food throughout the day with a BBQ and drinks on the 8th tee as well as lots of fun activities in and around the clubhouse. There was a bottle stall, a chipping challenge on a dartboard, a raffle and several children's activities including face painting and a magician.
A hot buffet was served up by Head Chef Dave and his brilliant team in the evening, followed by the prizegiving, dancing to local musicians and then a disco into the night.
An amazing amount of over £4000 was raised on the day for the Captain's Charity so thanks go to all of the sponsors and members for their generosity on a thoroughly enjoyable day.
