TEIGN Drifters B team went into the third round of Devon FA walking football fixtures with just six players available, but put in a really good account of themselves, reports Rob Morson.

After having to wait two hours in the cold for their first game, they not surprisingly started a bit slowly against a very good South Hams side and were unfortunate to lose by a single well-taken goal.

In the next game, against Torquay, the Drifters hit their stride, Phil Ewen and Mark Janes working together well in the middle and Pete Lee’s hold-up play providing a focus up front.

The Drifters took a deserved 1-0 win courtesy of a low near-post finish by Dave Fay, following a fine through ball from Phil Waite. The next three games all ended 0-0 with Pete Williams in goal dealing with anything that got through the Drifters’ back line. The Drifters were dominant in these games but unable to find a winning goal. So a good return of six points but probably less than they deserved.

Meanwhile, Drifters A, also with a diminished squad, showed great resilience following a heavy opening defeat to top team Torquay 0-4.

They managed two goalless draws against St. Martin’s and Argyle Pilgrims, but most encouraging were their two victories against Plymouth Argyle and Kingsteignton, both by one goal to nil.

Both victories showed great team discipline and two great goals. New player Stewart Edmondson hit a scorcher from 25 yards and Darren Walsh scored goal of the day with a typical thunderous left-foot snap shot to defeat Kingsteignton.

Overall, a good set of results, giving Team A eight points which should keep them in the top half of the table. Well done to all concerned!
