BUCKLAND Athletic U16 girls are enjoying yet another great season having been promoted last year.

They compete in the OTB Devon Girls Football League and after achieving promotion out of Division Two last season, they were concerned about struggling with Division One football.

Worry not though as they are flying high at the top of this division too as well as reaching the semi-final of the league cup and quarter-final of the county cup.

At the helm is Ben Williamson, a former player and captain for the Buckland 1st XI and for him, “Although it’s not quite the same as playing, I get so much satisfaction from these young people playing sport and building friendships.”

These U16 players are: Lacey Oldham, Cassidy Wright, Hollie Waltham, Eve Cameron, Liv Williamson, Hollie Burton, Isabella Baker, Amelia Jackson, Mae Walker, Bea Bowery, Emily Feasey, Leela Cartwright, Esmee Redding, Esmae Muir, Isla Brent, Maria Wood, Evie Salmon and Ella Halfyard, all of whom are key to the aforementioned success.

Williamson recognises that, “Of course there is a long way to go but whatever happens this season all the girls have stepped up, shown great teamwork and listened and taken on board what we are trying to do.”

Ella Halfyard has continued her excellent form from last season and is the league’s top scorer once again, as well as representing Exeter City alongside Hollie Burton and Esmae Muir, whilst Leela Cartwright plays for Plymouth Argyle and Devon.

“We cannot emphasise though that the whole squad have stepped up and the continued teamwork and support they give each other is outstanding”, continued the coach, “the club have been amazing in supporting the girls, the use of first-team changing rooms and the pitch/stadium has meant the girls have felt fully part of the club.”

Vertu Motors, Williamson’s company, are proud to be associated with such a progressive forward-thinking club, appearing as the main shirt sponsor and who knows, maybe there is a future Lioness amongst this team?
