BOVEY Tracey Bowls Club had their men’s team in Mid-Devon League action, closing out the campaign.
Taking the maximum 14 points from Kings ‘B’ saw them leapfrog those exact opponents and claim third- it is a shame that only the top two gain promotion.
Bovey travelled to Plymouth to meet Unity Park in the ladies’ County 2-Wood Triples competition and an impressive performance from Heidi Call, Kath Callard and Sue Johnson saw them progress to the semis.
There was a contrasting pair of home games for the ladies’ SDL squad, winning 8-2 on league points against Starcross before then losing 9-1 to Chudleigh.
In a busy week there were also two home mixed friendlies with Bovey losing by 60 shots to 77 against Bitton Park with the rinks shared two each and winning by 81 shots to 70 overall against Chudleigh despite the rink score of 2-1 to Chudleigh with one drawn.
Moving up to the latest action and the last two matches in the men's Over 55s League X Division both resulted in home wins for Bovey.
Against Dawlish Marina, they dropped two points to win by 6-2 and against Abbrook Park, Bovey took all the points, winning by 8-0.
Scores vs Marina; D Saunders, K Breame & P Joy 17-9; D Anderson, S Callard & R Bailey 19-20. Scores vs Abbrook; D Anderson, S Callard & R Bailey 18-12; C Shorland, D Saunders & P Joy 26-8.
These results ensured a comfortable mid-table finish for Bovey and, with their membership increased, it's likely that two teams will be entered for next season's competition.
In the County Ladies' Over 70s Pairs, Chris Towle and Kath Callard met a Sidmouth pairing who, by Kath's admission, were too good for them on the day, ending their involvement in the competition.
A home mixed triples friendly match against local neighbours Kingsteignton resulted in the rinks being shared two each with Bovey winning the overall score by a margin of 20 shots.
On Bank Holiday Monday, the Mixed Drawn Pairs event, postponed from July owing to bad weather, took place. After 15 teams had played three games each, the top-scoring two pairs were Sue Davies & Steve Callard and Chris Towle & Dave Johnson who now play off in next weekend's club finals.
Some results from the latter stages of the club competitions across the last couple of weeks and Roger Bailey beat Chris Shorland in the men’s 4-wood and Kenny Breame in the 2-wood. Andy Walding overcame Phil Joy in the latter as well whilst a marathon match lasting 30 ends saw Andy beat Kenny 21-20.
On the ladies' side, Sarah Breame and Heidi Call narrowly beat Yvonne Stanford and Sue Johnson in the pairs plus Roger Bailey was involved once more, reaching the Ley Cup final by beating Deb Simpson.
Lastly, Phil then beat Roger (men’s 4-wood), Sue beat Deb Bailey (ladies’ 2-wood) and Deb Simpson beat Sarah (ladies’ handicap).
