WOULD you like to get the ‘buzz’ about keeping bees?
If you have ever dreamed of keeping bees, now is the time to sign up to a beginner’s beekeeping course, writes Ineke Leer.
Newton Abbot Beekeeping Association ( NABKA ) warmly welcome you to a six-week course for beginners at our apiary Club House in Clay Lane, near to Chudleigh Knighton.
The course is a series of theory sessions, presented by multiple experienced bee keepers from NABKA. These sessions will be followed by practical, hands on bee keeping later in the spring when weather permits.
If you enjoy learning, you will love being a beekeeper! Beekeeping is a fascinating, interesting and absorbing hobby. Once you get the initial ‘buzz’ about bees and the amazing feats that they achieve, you could well become involved in learning about bees for the rest of your life.
There really is so much to learn about these incredible creatures. For example, did you know that bees perform a waggle dance back in their dark hive to communicate to their sisters where they have found good forage?
This beginners’ beekeeping course will be starting on Thursday, March 2 at 7pm for about 90 minutes and will be every other Thursday evening for six theory sessions, finishing on Thursday, May 11.
During these sessions, you will learn enough to get you started as a beekeeper, as well as receive ongoing help and the opportunity to practice on the bees in our apiary which has the three most common hives in the UK.
Advice will be given on the best hive for your needs. All ages are welcome. We already have one teenager signed up for this course. The course is £75. This also includes one year’s membership to Devon and British Beekeepers.
Don’t wait: Now is a great time to start and you may have some honey to give as presents this Christmas. For more details, please email the NABKA Chair Ian Thompson: that [email protected]
