IF Teignbridge Council planners took a decision on plans to build a housing estate on the edge of Newton Abbot it would be going against democratic procedure because the consultation was not finished, members were warned at their meeting on Tuesday.
Linden Homes South West Ltd wants permission for 203 homes, a drop of 25 on the original application, along with public open space and associated infrastructure at Whitehill, Exeter Road.
The development, earmarked in the district’s Local Plan, proposes 20 per cent affordable and five per cent self-build plots, and is part of at least 450 homes.
Officers had recommended approval with delegated authority provided the developer entered into a Section 106 Agreement. Business manager Nick Davies was also to consider any further representations received during the remaining publicity period and determine whether they should be referred back to committee.
After members heard the consultation on the draft development framework was several weeks away, they agreed to a deferment.
