There was success for for many of Teignbridge's competitors at the Devon Games to Inspire 2010 at the weekend, with the district finishing runners-up.
Held in Tavistock on Saturday, the Devon Games to Inspire saw some 1,600 competitors, from ten local authority areas, taking part in a range of sporting competitions and cultural performances at Tavistock College, Crowndale, and the Meadows in Tavistock.
Among the activities were swimming, running, cricket and skateboarding, plus live music and dancing throughout the day.
Teignbridge won the following medals, helping it secure overall second place behind winners West Devon:
Tennis – gold
High Five Netball – gold
Girls Cricket – gold
Mixed Mini Soccer – silver
Street Sports – silver (skateboarding) and bronze (BMX)
Gymnastics – bronze
Aquathlon – bronze
'Coming second in the overall local authority results meant fending off challenges from many of Devon's larger districts and unitary authorities including Plymouth, Exeter, Torbay and North Devon,' said a spokesman for the Teignbridge squad.
'Thanks go to the volunteers and team managers from various schools and clubs across the district who helped make the day a success, including Robert Elver (tennis), Julia Harvey (high five), Claire Corrick and Jenny Gratton (netball), Kate Rooke (table tennis), Shaun Woodward (street sports), Ian Bowen and Beth Coombes (aquathlon), Colleen Devincenzi, Nick Gillard, Hannah Taylor and Ben McDonald (tag rugby), Nick Gillard, Claire Gillard and Grace Earley (athletics), Derek Conway, Steve Crump and Annette Adamson (badminton), Emma Vernae and Trish Warren (gymnastics), Becky Mason and Sara Dallyn (girls' cricket), and Pete Boston and Hailey Naisbett-Jones (mixed mini soccer).
'This year, Teignbridge even entered a new Ultimate Frisbee team thanks to newly-qualified local coaches Amy Jones and Jane Rochelle.'
The Teignbridge Dance team, managed and choreographed by the council's Dance This Way coordinator Katherine Nietzebka, showcased months of hard work in a brilliant dance performance on the main stage at the event.
The event was attended by Teignbridge Council's chairman, Cllr Steven Purser, and the Teignbridge teams were organised by Nikki Taylor and Laura Cooper from Teignbridge Council's Green Spaces and Active Leisure Department.
The event was the attended by more than 200 competitors from across Teignbridge, with a series of open trials and coaching sessions taking place throughout April, May, June and July leading up to the games, and assisting Teignbridge in achieving such strong results.
