Businesses from around Teignbridge have been celebrated at the recent Devon Women in Business awards.
Dawlish-based illustrator Becki Higgins from Becki Leigh Studios won the Sole Trader / Freelancer of the year award. Her business has grown significantly over the past four years. She now boasts over 3000 reviews on her Etsy shop and has built a vibrant social media community. ‘This creative mum has shown that her commercial instinct is just as impressive as her creative flair,’ commented a spokesperson from DWIB. Becki was also highly commended in the Customer Service Excellence Award.
Michelle Grist from Wray Valley bed and breakfast and campsite near Lustleigh came away with the Eco-Friendly Business of the Year award. Judges were impressed with the way the business ‘ensures that the principles of sustainability are embedded into everything they do’.
Newton Abbot was well represented in a number of categories. Wellbeing In Action’s founder and chief executive Lindie Wadlan was named Inspirational Leader of the Year. ‘With boundless energy and compassion, she works tirelessly to support people during their most challenging times. Her hands-on approach, creative problem-solving, and deep commitment to her community have transformed countless lives,’ the judges agreed. ‘Whether guiding her team or offering a lifeline to those in need, her ability to inspire is unmatched. She leads by example, making the impossible possible and empowers everyone around her to believe in a brighter future,’ they added.
Lindie’s right-hand woman, Emma Warren, was also recognised with the Supporting Act of the Year award thanks to her ability to uplift others during challenging times.
Rebecca Marks from Scarlett Entertainment won the Employer of the Year award, and Sara Ritterhausen from Burnham Nurseries, home of Orchid Paradise, was highly commended.
The Devon Women in Business Awards took place at Winslade Manor near Exeter on November 9. The were established in 2021 by local businesswomen, Louise Jenner and Maureen Townsend, to recognise the efforts and achievements of women in business across the county.
