SUPERPROUD – that’s the reaction from the parents of a plucky Kingsteignton toddler who’s successfully done his bit for a deserving local charity.
Last week we featured 18-month-old Elijah Holt, from Kingsteignton, who was attempting to walk 21 steps with his new walking frame to help raise some funds for the Living Down South charity on World Down Syndrome Day as part of the 21 for 21 challenge.
The charity is a group run for and by members of the Down syndrome community in South Devon and supports families, children and adults with Down syndrome.
Well, the good news is the cheeky little chap, encouraged on by mum and dad Louise and Simon, plus sister Isabelle, has managed it – and with a few steps more to boot.
‘We’re chuffed to bits and he’s really done himself proud,’ said delighted mum Louise.
‘Elijah didn’t stop at 21 but went onto to do 30 steps, before falling down on his backside and applauding himself.’
Babies born with Down’s tend to be later developers then other youngsters and so Elijah only just started to walk independently a few weeks ago with the aid of his new frame – which he’s now taken to big time.
‘The Living Down South was hoping to raise £2,100 on their justgiving page, which ties in with the date of March 21 and the fact that anyone with Down Syndrome has an extra chromosome 21,’ continued Louise.
‘However, along with Elijah’s little efforts, and everyone else who was doing a challenge on the Sunday, that figure has now passed the £4,000 mark which is really amazing for the charity.’
The page is still open for a few more days anyone wishing to donate can do so at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/lds21for21
