SAINSBURY’s stores in Teignbridge are expected to be affected by national cuts.

The supermarket chain has announced it is to shed 3,000 jobs nationwide.

Along with this, it is to close its remaining 61 cafes and shut its patisserie, hot food and pizza counters as part of a cost-cutting plan.

The Newton Abbot store at Penn Inn no longer has an in store cafe.

But the supermarket in Dawlish has a hot food and pizza counter which are expected to shut down under the changes.

It is not know when these changes will come into effect.

The major restructuring was announced by the supermarket giant as it faces a hike in its National Insurance contributions following the Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ budget.

The proposals, which have already been shared with staff, are expected to lead to the reduction of more than 3,000 roles across the business.

This includes a 20 per cent reduction in senior management positions.

The supermarket says the move will ;simplify the business’, adding that most Sainsbury’s shoppers ‘do not use the cafés regularly’.

Sainsbury’s also plans to make a 20 per cent reduction in senior management roles, saying the business faces a ‘particularly challenging cost environment’.

Although Sainsbury’s was already in the midst of a plan to save £1bn over the next few years, the rise in employer’s National Insurance contributions has also been a factor in the latest restructuring plan.

Sainsbury’s has said that the rise in employer’s National Insurance contributions will cost it £140m from April.

Simon Roberts, Sainsbury’s chief executive, said the supermarket was facing a ‘particularly challenging cost environment’ as it moves forward with its company strategy.

He said: ‘We have had to make tough choices about where we can afford to invest and where we need to do things differently to make our business more efficient and effective.’
