STUDENTS from Teignmouth Community College School have raised £550 for HITS foodbank with a sponsored walk.

The young people chose the charity themselves after researching their options.

Then they embarked on a seven mile trek from Dawlish to Teignmouth.

David Cox, chairman of trustees of HITS Foodbank, said: ‘We are really grateful for this fundraising effort,  it’s great to know that the students themselves chose HITS.

‘I know all the volunteers and trustees would like to thank the students for their tremendous effort.’

The food bank charity reports that it has seen unprecedented numbers of people are now turning to it, as the cost-of-living crisis takes its toll.

However trustee Trish Kirkby said the generosity of local people mean HITS is in better shape than other foodbanks.

The charity warns that while short-term interventions may help families get back on their feet, long-term use is ‘neither sustainable nor dignified’ for people who are struggling.
