EMPLOYEES at Homebase are ‘extremely worried’ about the future after the DIY store was sold for just one pound, it has been claimed.

Bosses at shopworkers’ trade union Usdaw are calling for urgent meetings to secure as many jobs as possible as the company changes hands.

The major retailer – which has a hub in Newton Abbot – was bought by Hilco from Wesfarmers for a quid.

Usdaw national officer Dave Gill said: ‘Staff in Homebase stores are extremely worried for the future after the company’s ownership changes yet again.

‘Clearly the sale for just one pound is disturbing. I am in touch with the company and we are seeking urgent meetings to secure jobs.’

‘No comment’ was the answer given by a Homebase spokesman when asked what the future holds for the Newton Abbot store.
