SURFERS Against Sewage is advising people not to swim in the sea off Teignmouth Town along with four other holiday beaches on the South coast of Devon today.
The alerts have been issued warning of possible contamination due to heavy rain over the last 48 hours, which in some places is causing storm overflows to discharge into the water.
Warnings are in place for Wembury, near Plymouth, Teignmouth Town, Exmouth, Sidmouth Town and Beer.
There are no warnings in place for other Teignbridge beaches marked on the map – Shaldon, Holcombe, Coryton Cove, Dawlish Town and Dawlish Warren.
The SAS website offers people that chance to ‘Check your local water quality now!
‘Ensure your trip to the beach is not currently at risk from any water quality issues.
‘The Safer Seas Service will point you towards beaches with no recent pollution incidents.’
Of Teignmouth Town the map says : ‘Pollution Risk Warning: Bathing not advised today due to the likelihood of reduced water quality.
‘Located NE of the Teign Estuary, Teignmouth Town beach is a 1km stretch of sand backed by a promenade and the town. A sewer overflow at the railway station discharges northeast of the beach.’
It also mentions Dawlish Warren but says ‘No water quality alerts in place.’
