TEIGNMOUTH Community College students were among those from Devon pitting their wits against other students from across the region, in a series of mental and physical challenges devised by the Army, for this year's coveted Army Schools Challenge. The challenge was held last month at HMS Raleigh at Torpoint. Students aged 14-17 from across Devon and Cornwall competed against each other in a series of challenging tasks and activities designed to stretch their physical and mental abilities, encourage teamwork and leadership skills and root out the best in the west. The activities were devised by a variety of Army units and regiments, including the Royal Artillery, the Royal Tank Regiment, communications experts, the Royal Corps of Signals and the local combat unit, the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment. More than 700 students, in teams of 10, took part in a wide range of tasks including an obstacle course, group initiative tests, semaphore communication tasks, a climbing tower challenge, and camouflage and archery skills. Soldiers were on hand to guide the students through each task and talk about the wide range of job and opportunities on offer, ranging from chefs to dentists, musicians to postal workers, drivers to accountants and linguists to infantry soldiers.
