A NEWTON Abbot man has been sentenced to sixteen weeks in prison for a number of shoplifting offences.

Karl Underwood, of Carlisle Road, Newton Abbot, appeared before Plymouth Magistrates Court on Thursday, April 3 where he was sentenced to 16 weeks in prison for a number of shoplifting offences that he committed in March.

The incidents took place in Newton Abbot and Torquay.

Underwood, 28, was also ordered to pay compensation to all victims and was recalled on licence for a further 14 days.

‘Shoplifting will not be tolerated in our communities’ a spokesperson for Newton Abbot Police said.

‘We work closely with local businesses to maintain a safe community and our officers work hard to bring offenders to justice’ the spokesperson added.
