Shaldon Beach is to close early next month to enable the Parish Council to re-profile the sand line following winter storms.
‘As with previous years, the aim of the one and a half days is to build up the beach in front of Marine Parade by the steps which has disappeared over the winter period due to the storms,’ a spokesperson from Shaldon Parish Council said. ‘This will involve using heavy machinery to move sand and rocks.’
A partial beach closure between the ferry shelter and Marine Parade steps will take place between 2pm and 6pm on Thursday May 15 with a full beach closure between 8am and 5pm on Friday May 16.
Some boat owners will be required to move their vessels to allow the works to take place.
The Shaldon to Teignmouth Ferry will continue to operate, but passengers will be required to remain in the ferry shelter and await an escort while the beach is closed.
Ness Cove Beach in Shaldon will be unaffected by the closures.
Shaldon Parish Council thanked beach users for their patience while the ‘essential’ work takes place and said it would welcome any volunteers wishing to help with the work, promising bacon baps and drinks.
Anyone interested in helping should contact the Parish Clerk by emailing [email protected] or any of the Parish Councillors.
The Parish Council is also hoping to hold a beach clean, using an industrial magnet to pick up any loose nails that may have migrated into the sand from the annual bonfire. However, this will take place on a separate occasion due to space constraints along the strand line.
