Wolborough Primary School, Newton Abbot, continued its long-standing tradition to celebrate May Day last week.

Luckily the rain held off and nearly 200 pupils danced around the maypole by the clock tower in the town to mark the occasion on Thursday. The day after, the school and nursery class danced again for parents.

At the dance event, Alisha Waldron, 11, was crowned May Queen by Newton Abbot mayor Cllr Carol Bunday.

'It was very successful and I've received some great feedback,' said Tracy Hoare, headteacher of the school.

The nursery and reception classes at Highweek Primary School also danced for May Day.

Many pupils had their face painted for the celebration.

The youngsters were taught the special dances by former teacher Ann Dyke, who visits the school annually to help them practise.
