A NEWTON Abbot school has been named as one of 750 that will provide free breakfast clubs as part of a government scheme.
Pupils attending Bearnes Voluntary Primary School will be among the 180,000 offered a healthy and varied breakfast in school before class as a part of Labour’s ‘Plan for Change’ agenda.
St Mary's Catholic Primary School in Buckfast, St Catherine's CofE Primary School in Heathfeild and Dunsford Community Academy will also be taking part in the pilot scheme, which starts in April and will put ‘£450 a year back in parents’ pockets’, according to the government.
Of the 750 schools in the pilot, Devon tops the list, with 25 schools taking part.
This comes ahead of planned roll-out to all of England.
Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, said: ‘Free breakfast clubs sit right at the heart of our Plan for Change, breaking the link between background and success for families all over the country.
‘Breakfast clubs can have a transformative impact on the lives of children, feeding hungry tummies and fuelling hungry minds, so every child begins the day ready to learn.
‘Alongside our plans to roll out school-based nurseries and get thousands more children school-ready, this government is delivering the reforms needed to give every child, wherever they grow up, the best start in life.’
The clubs come alongside a raft of measures designed to cut the cost of living for families, including the commitment to significantly cut uniform costs through a cap on branded items and complement government-funded childcare, the Government says.
