A FOOTBALLER who grew up in Teignmouth was set to play in the newly-named Uefa Europa League last night – representing club side B36 Torshavn, of the Faroe Islands.
Striker Sam Malsom (left) travelled to Georgia, where his current side faced FC Olimpi Rustavi in the first match of the two-legged tie.
The 22-year-old, already a veteran of the famous competition, having faced Danish side Brondby last season in front of a 20,000-strong crowd, is hoping to make a big impression over the two matches, with many big teams across Europe watching closely.
His football journey started when he was snapped up by Torquay United at the age of 12.
Some four years later, after the closure of their Centre of Excellence, the Teignmouth youngster was released, and subsequently joined Bishopsteignton.
He was soon plucked from the non-league side by Plymouth Argyle where Malsom settled well, scoring 29 goals in 24 youth and reserve team appearances.
Despite this considerable return, manager Ian Holloway released him, citing the lack of first team opportunities being open to him.
Malsom then embarked on a plethora of trials and stints, both at home and abroad before, B36 Torshavn signed him in 2008.
In the Faroe Islands, the striker soon hit his stride, scoring regularly and helping his side to second place in the league.
Such form has attracted the attention of various Scandinavian clubs along the way.
