We are writing regarding an application for a fourth touring caravan site fronting a large stretch of the A383 Ashburton Road.
With three already on this road, another close by on the A38 – which together total almost 200 pitches – thre is no demonstrable need for another, especially as the existing ones are not running at capacity, even in the high season.
The road has a 60-mile an hour speed limit, has had numerous accidents, some fatal. Slow moving caravans turning onto and off the A383 will increase the likelihood of a major accident.
Part of the proposed site is under power cables (over the planned children's play area) and the southern boundary will be lapped by floodwater when the Holbeam Dam is closed, posing a hazard to children and animals.
With no southbound turn-off at the A38/A383 junction, caravans will add to the already-congested flow into and through Newton Abbot via the A382.
One hundred hectares of agricultural land is already being lost to housing development from Seale-Hayne, Mile End and Hele Park and further small-scale nibbling away of farmland should be discouraged.
This is a clear case of development in the open countryside, contrary to local planning policy and is not part of the Local Plan.
This alone should be reason to refuse the application.MORE LETTERS IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
